Some common errors among the users of English:
Today "English" is a very common language used by people all over the world. Its growing international popularity has enabled the mixing of cultures, language codes and global exchange. Bernard Shaw has said in his essay entitled, Spoken English and Broken English that communicative English can comprise incomplete sentences. The main purpose of spoken English is to communicate the thought process. Once it is done, the consequent actions can follow. It is not necessary always to mind the grammatical structure of spoken language. Bernard Shaw says in his essay that often he used the word "clockst" instead of asking a full sentence: "What is the time?" Short words, disjunctive syntax, broken sentences can be used while speaking but it is not to be entertained in official or written English. However, we do not pay heed to some of the inappropriate usages even while posting official letters, writing administrative notices or academic articles. I would present a list of common mistakes which we tend to make even in written English.
Firstly, we often confuse the spellings of the noun form and verb form of a word which may have no phonemic difference. It is noteworthy to see the difference of spelling for example in the word "advice" (noun form) and "advise" (verb form). We can put it in a sentence form for instance: "The advice of Peter is good," or "Peter advised me not to smoke." We can make a list of words which have different spellings for verb and noun forms: "practice" is another example.
Secondly, we sometimes make improper use of prepositions. The phrase "consists of" can be substituted with the word "comprises" but we forget to remove the "of" after "comprises". Other examples include "accustomed/conform to" not "accustomed/conform with," "eager about" not "eager for", "benefited by" not "benefited from," "cured/deprived of" not "cured/deprived from", "cope to" not "cope with" etc. If we are conscious, we can avoid such other similar mistakes.
Thirdly, we tend to ignore certain confusions in the parts of speech. For example, "John does not play cricket as I do," is the correct version but we often use "like" instead of "as." If we consider another sentence: "Ram does not look like his brother". Here "as" cannot be used instead of "like." Sometimes we confuse between "due to" and "because of." For instance the phrase "because of" in the sentence "He came late because of an accident" cannot be substituted by the phrase "due to." If we use "due to", then it must qualify some noun not verb or direct action. Thus, we can say alternatively, "His delay (noun) was due to an accident."
Fourthly, in certain cases we cannot state any grammatical rule for specific usages. For example, "Raj took his examination" is better than "Raj gave his examination." Instead of saying: "I will have my hair cut," we say: "I am going to cut my hair." It is better to say "this morning" than "today morning."
Fifthly, it is to be noted that generally nouns do not take any articles. However, when it is used in a specific case then articles can be used before nouns. Some instances are: "The wisdom of Solomon", "The treachery of Judas", "The cows in the field", "the summer of last year", "a new book", etc.
Sixthly, sometimes we confuse words of similar sense but different usages. For example we cannot replace the word "ill" by "sick" in the sentence: "He has been ill for over a year." The word "home" is better than "your house." For instance the sentence: "Go to your house now", can be well replaced by "go home now." The "streets of the town" is a better phrase for the "roads of the town." The word "reason" should be substituted with "cause" in the sentence: "What is the reason of your delay?" We should use the word "scenery" instead of "scene" in the sentence: "The scenery of Geneva is beautiful."
Lastly, it should be kept in the mind that it is always better to use affirmative and confident statements instead of negative and dubious sentences. So we can say: "Please come to visit us", instead of a negative interrogation: "Why don't you come to visit us?" After all, language mirrors the attitude and mental constitution of a person. An optimist always uses positive statements.
