Some hints and tips for your Kenya Safari

So, you've finally booked your trip to Kenya. Now, what to take and what to take it in. A soft bag is preferable especially if you are staying at a game lodge, as these are much easier to squeeze into light aircraft, 4x4s and minibuses which are the most common form of transport.

When travelling to Kenya the most important thing is to find out what vaccinations you need, as you will be asked to produce evidence of them to prove that you have taken the necessary precautions. You should also make sure you take anti malaria tablets starting one week before you enter the country, during your time there and for six weeks after your holiday. You should also take basic painkillers, anti diarrhoea medication, plasters for blisters and antibiotic cream for bites and scratches. A good insect repellent for during the day and an insect spray to clear your room at night are also a good investment.

When it comes to clothing, light colours are better, although too much white should be avoided. Try light tans, khakis etc. Dark colours will make you hotter and they can also attract tsetse flies, which are visitors that you really don't want. Long sleeved t-shirts and trousers are also a good idea, as they mean you are less likely to be bitten or sunburnt, which can make the sometimes bumpy travelling a lot worse. Some hotels and lodges will have a policy of long trousers in their restaurants, so make sure you pack at least a pair. You'll be heading out on your game drives very early in the morning, so make sure you pack a light sweater or jacket as sometimes the weather can be chilly. Make sure it isn't too bulky though, because you'll soon have it packed up when the sun comes out.

You should also make sure you have a good hat to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your head, as well as a good pair of sunglasses with a lanyard; it'll make swapping with your binoculars much easier. Sun block and sunscreen are also a must. You should make sure you take a good pair of walking boots or shoes as you may well do some walking, especially if you're visiting a Maasai village. A light pair of shoes may be preferable for dinner and whilst lounging around at the hotel. A small backpack is ideal for carrying things whilst on safari and some sort of small bag is a definite must. You should also bring a guide book, binoculars on a lanyard and a camera.

So make sure you get the most out of your luxury Kenya holidays by doing your research and finding out exactly what you need, it'll help make that holiday of a lifetime perfect.
