If you are driving in Spain and are not used driving in a foreign country the you should remember some important points and some useful terms that will make your driving experience a little smoother.
Firstly if you are from the UK the main thing you need to remember is that in Spain they drive on the right. This means that your car (if you are hiring a vehicle) will be a left hand drive. When on dual carriage ways remember to keep to the right and use the left lane for overtaking.
The speed limits and speedometers in the vehicles are in KPH not MPH so don't get confused with speed.
Speed Limits Most urban areas will have speed limits from 60 kph. Dual carriage ways and motorways will vary between 100 KPH and 120 KPH so always keep an eye to ensure that you are travelling at the correct maximum speed.
If you are renting a vehicle then you will also need to be aware that there are now a number of speed cameras in operation up and down the coast and you as the driver of the vehicle will be liable for any speeding fines, even if they come in after you have gone home. In order to avoid your credit card being charged for such items ensure that you stay within the speed limits.
Turning Left Very few roads in Spain allow you to turn left. Never stop in the middle of the road on a dual carriage way to turn left as this is illegal in Spain. You will need to look for special turning point which allow you to change direction cambio de sentido'. You will exit on the right and then either go up and over, under or across the road as directed.
Litter and Cigarettes It is illegal to throw litter or lit cigarettes from a vehicle, the latter resulting in a heavy fine as it could be the cause of a major bush fire.
If you bear the above in mind you should have a hassle free driving experience in Spain.
