Some do get lucky and end up marrying their childhood sweetheart. My family owned a huge farm house in California, which is where I spent most of my growing years. My neighbor and playmate was a boy named Clifford who was a bit of a bully when amongst the boys, but was as gentle as a lamb when it came to playing with the girls. This was probably my first and lasting impression of Clifford, who finally went on to study in San Francisco. I went my way after school, and ended up with a job in New York, while my parents continued to stay on the farm.
I visited mum and dad frequently but didn't really find out much about Cliffy, who didn't seem to find the time to come home except for the holidays in December. What I used to remember about Cliffy most was the way he comforted me if I got hurt. His words of encouragement was enough to make me feel on top of the world. One wet and rainy day in New York, I found nothing going right for me in the office. Mum and dad weren't keeping well too, which added to my worries. Something made me think of Cliffy and his wonderful words of encouragement, which brought a smile to my lips.
My boss was extremely understanding and seeing the state I was in he asked me to take a couple of days off and go home to rejuvenate myself and be with my parents. I landed home and to my surprise, I saw Clifford paying a visit to my parents. I rushed upstairs to leave my bags and mum came running behind to tell me that I was the first person that Clifford asked to about.
Call it luck, destiny, or what you may this was the beginning of something amazing. Clifford had been busy with his career and job, and finally found time to come home for a few weeks. We spent hours reminiscing and when I reminded him of the way he used to comfort me, he passed it off as being his duty. He hadn't seemed to have changed one bit. We went out a few times and one day Clifford told me he have to leave. My heart sunk, but I knew this was life and we had to move on. He paused, looked at me for a while, and then pulls out a beautiful diamond ring from his pocket. This time around, Clifford had to comfort me when he saw the tears in my eyes, for different reasons. It's been three years now since the day I said "I Do', and he is still the same loving man I knew.
