International Indifference To Rape As Warfare

Worldwide, in this day age, women and girls still are raped as a matter of routine in unconscionable war-crimes. They were ruthlessly savaged by the score during the Bosnian War. When Iraq invaded Kuwait it was in the first wave of assault that females were violated, tortured by sexual assault, in mind-staggering numbers. And a deplorable aspect of the man's-inhumanity-to-man tragedy protested in Darfur is the thousands of attacks characterizing man's inhumanity to woman. Now comes an Aug. 23rd New York Times report that in July, a horde of between 200 and 400 Rwandan rebels gang-raped at least 150 women during a weekend raid on villages in eastern Congo, near the mining center of Walikale. These animals spent from July 30 through Aug. 3rd not just dehumanizing their victims one-on-one but subjecting each to assault by several men taking turns. A witness stated that women were raped by two to six men at a time. This within 20 miles of a United Nations military base. Which is most telling and should surprise absolutely no one, since the UN so-called peacekeeping forces are well known for not doing a damned thing in troubled countries except making sure rich foreign nationals get out safely. They certainly don't have a reputation for rescuing rape victims or, more importantly, preventing it in the first place, protecting vulnerable females from predictable attack. What took place in the Congo is just one more instance the international neglect by which women have their humanity summarily ignored and, as a result, brutally stripped from them.

The United Nations, the Times article says, blamed the ethnic Hutu group Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) for the attack. Well, that's pretty much what The United Nations is good for, making ineffectual statements denouncing and decrying sexual war-crimes but not doing very much about it. Particularly galling is that ever conspicuous UN member that claims to stand for everything decent in the universe and to be some kind of stalwart champion to the oppressed and downtrodden, blah, blah, blah, the good old U S of A. You do realize if we were talking 150 oil wells that Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda had seized from an ally, the US would be breaking its neck to go in there and get them back. As a perfect example, look what it took for this country to intervene in Kuwait. Women and girl had been raped on such a scale it had become for Iraqi soldiers literally a widely indulged sport. Soon as troops and tanks got within striking distance of Kuwait's oil fields it was time to get serious. All the smarmy platitudes about co-existing and the admonishing of aggressors ceased and the US puts its military might where its mouth was.

It will snow in hell before we see the US or any other of the pathetically posturing UN members go into the Congo and see to it that another horrifying tragedy like this recent mass gang-rape doesn't happen again. Women are not as important as oil. It's that simple. A woman's inherent right to be treated as a human being do not count. It doesn't count in the Congo like it doesn't count in Darfur like it didn't count in Kuwait and like it didn't count in the Bosnian War. Because across the planet, countries just don't give a damn.
