Something I Said/Mel Gibson Needs To Get Help

It's really sad about Mel Gibson and his manic meltdown, first the guy's drunken anti-Semetic tirade after a traffic stop by police and, just recently, badgering his live-in girlfriend with a sexist harangue that included a viciously racist remark. Self-destruction, after all, is a terribly pathetic sight to witness. And the whole world, literally with the reach of the Internet, has watched Gibson destroy himself as a human being worthy of any respect at all as well as, of course, an internationally idolized actor and director who, inconceivable as it once would have been, may very well have succeeded in trashing his own career and tarnishing the memory of his considerable cinematic accomplishments.
A cruel irony is that he vaulted to superstardom by playing a character who actually suffered severe depression, Martin Riggs of Lethal Weapon, the loose-cannon cop who couldn't get over the death of his wife and took it out on his job, pushing himself to just this side of suicide. And, of course, it is lost on no one that Danny Glover got famous in the same film, playing straight-man to Gibson's wildly laughable antics, at the same time portraying on-screen what in the those days was one of the few role-model roles for Black men, loving hubby and responsible dad Roger Murtaugh, Riggs' partner. You have to wonder what in the hell Glover thinks when he ponders what's going on now with Gibson -- they weren't just co-workers, they had a friendship. One that went past palling around on the set. When Gibson dumped his wife for the girl friend, Glover had his boy's back, saying, [he] will "come out of it. Mel is an extraordinary man and certainly a friend one of the most generous men that I have ever met. I know that he'll come out of it and the whole family will come out of it." I wonder if he thinks Gibson'll come out of this. It'd be a miracle.
You can be sure, there will be -- maybe even before this has time to hit print -- the requiste damage control apology, but, the old phrase a day late and a dollar short never had more meaning than it does in this case. In early July of this year, when Ed Limato, Gibson's agent and long a member of the William Morris Agency, died, Ari Emanuel, in charge at Endeavor Talent Agency, which had merged with William Morris, dropped Gibson like a hot rock. He -- to hell with Gibson's apology (which was half-baked, anyway) -- had wanted to do it for years, but held off about of respect for Limato. Gibson now can grovel, beg for forgiveness, climb up on a cross if he wants -- nails and all. The only one it'll work with is his dog. And that's if the dog hasn't been anywhere near a television, radio, newspaper or the Internet.
Frankly, I feel bad for the guy. Especially if he doesn't actually realize what a horse's asterisk he has become and truly thinks this simply is something that time will take care of. There's no telling whether he's actually an anti-Semite, a bigot and a sexist because it is so crystal clear that he's a basket case. And a raging drunk. He needs clinical help. That's all that's left for him now. He sure doesn't have a hope in hell of being hired to act in or direct a movie. He's lucky if there's a public place he can show his face without feeling cheap as two cents waitin' on change. The guy is sick. And needs to get some serious help. If only to be able to live with himself, since God knows nobody else can.
Before does something else that is even worse, someone ought to call for the folk in the white coats to come and drop a butterfly net over Mel Gibson, because the man is crazy as an out-house rat
