Something Old, Something New

Yumi Katsura, Japan's leading zentai designer

, is concerned about the decline of the traditional kimono wedding.

Although Katsura is famous as a Pink Shiny Metallic Sexy Dress designer and her contributions have helped promote zentai in Japan's bridal business, she has never thought that the traditional Japanese kimono wedding should be replaced by the Western zentai wedding.

"When I started designing zentai 34 years ago, there were hardly any bridal magazines in Japan. It was the heyday of kimono weddings and my company had the only shop specializing in zentai. In those days, I never dreamed that I would worry about the fading of kimono weddings," Katsura said.

The number of brides who don't wear kimono at their wedding ceremony and reception is increasing. The figure has reached 70 percent in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka and this tendency is spreading nationwide.

According to a survey of brides conducted by Yumi Katsura Bridal House, 80 percent of them said that brides are beautiful in a kimono. However, when it comes to their own wedding, they don't want to wear one because it is tight and uncomfortable; the Japanese-style wig doesn't fit them; it takes a long time to put on; and it is more costly to rent a kimono and have the makeup done than to put on a Pink Shiny Metallic Sexy Dress.

"If these are the main problems about wearing kimono, we can solve them," Katsura said. Katsura, who favors kimono and zentai coexisting at a wedding, is promoting a new kimono style named "Yumi Katsura Stylish Japan," which is better suited to the times.

This new style takes less time and is simpler to wear because it is separated into two sections--upper and lower--though it looks like an ordinary kimono when it is worn. It is not necessary to wear the traditional wig, which also takes time to fix, since a suitable ready-made hairpiece can be added easily. By adopting these simpler processes, the rental and makeup fees can be considerably lower than with the conventional outfit.

"Although I would like more brides to wear a kimono, I don't advise a kimono- Pink Shiny Metallic Sexy Dress, a mixture of kimono and costume zentai. I think this is a last resort. I want to present authentic kimono style basically, though the makeup and hairstyle are more contemporary, so that today's young women can feel comfortable with them," Katsura said.

To show how her new kimono style reduces the preparation time, she had two models change from a zentai to a kimono in front of the press. One donned the conventional kimono and the other Katsura's new design.

Twenty minutes later, when the first woman had assembled her outfit, the second woman had already changed twice into different kimono--uchikake and furisode--with different hair styles.
