There are various mechanical parts that are used in different machines. Among them, the gear coupling is also rather important. A gear coupling is a power transmission coupling which uses a hub with gear teeth on the outside diameter of the input shaft. It is a mechanical device for transmitting torque between two shafts that are not colinear. The gear coupling is composed of a flexible joint that is fixed to each shaft.

A coupling comprises a clutch having an input connection to the power take off and an output for connection to power transmission input of the trailer unit. Like other kinds of mechanical parts, there are also types of couplings. One kind is the flexible coupling. Taking the flexible coupling as an example, they couple or connect rotating members such as motors and drive shafts while allowing misalignment in either angular or parallel offset orientation. You should take some mechanical properties into consideration when searching for this kind of coupling such as rated torque, rated speed, torsional stiffness, and backlash. Rated torque is the maximum service torque for which coupling is rated. And the rated speed is the maximum rated rotational speed of coupling. Stiffness is expressed in torque per unit angular deformation. Backlash is the rotational position loss due to a direction change.

The mounting of the couplings also need to be paid much attention. There are many methods to mount couplings on a shaft. On way to mount a coupling is to secure couplings to the shaft with a setscrew. Besides, it can also be mounted with the help of adhesives. But the adhesive should be applied to the couplings and not to the shaft directly.

Another important aspect is the lubrication. Because couplings are usually metal, they do require lubrication to guarantee the working life. To maximize the life of components such as bearings and shafts, flexibility must be built in to absorb the residual misalignment that remains after all possible adjustments are made. Proper lubrication of couplings is critical to their performance. As for the flexible couplings, both lubricating oils and greases can be selected to lubricate them. And the lubricated flexible couplings require protection from the low amplitude relative motion that develops between their components.
