Nokia used to the be the kings of the mobile phone market

, at least in the UK, bringing out some of the first and best mass produced mobile phones and making a name for themselves thanks to their easy to use handsets which were durable, reliable and well priced. When the smartphone revolution hit though, Nokia began to fall behind, and not every phone in the companies 'N' series has really been worth a look when comparing them to other popular phones out at the same time. Can the N8 change that? Read on to find out.

Design

The first thing you'll notice about the Nokia N8 Vodafone is the striking design, which comes in a range of different colours: dark grey, silver, white, green, blue and , the most garish of all , orange. For a smartphone it's actually quite a chunky piece of kit, but it's couldn't be considered fat or cumbersome. It's still ready to fit into any sensible pocket and be carried around all day; it just doesn't mimic the super slim designs of other phones on the market.

The front of the phone is very minimal, with the 3.5 inch display taking up the vast majority of the space and only one actual button accessible on the front. This button does have two uses though: switching between the home and menu screens when pressed quickly, and showing you all over your open applications when held down.

Features

The pure power of the phones camera explains why the phone couldn't quite manage to get as thin as some competitors; it's a 12 megapixel beast with full Xenon flash technology with what Nokia are calling the largest sensor available on any phone right now. The phone takes amazing pictures which are focused, sharp and vibrant and puts almost any other phone on a camera to shame, bringing us one step closer to a time when compact cameras will really be no better than a good smart phone.

There's also a front facing camera for video chatting and taking pictures of yourself. The back camera does some great video shots at 720p HD, and the phone even has an HDMI out so you can go straight home and play videos directly from your phone to your television without having to worry about expensive and time consuming software and conversions just to view a few videos: the HDMI cable is even included by default!

The operating system, Symbian, has also improved greatly, but may still not be quite as user friendly or instantly accessible as Android or iPhone OS. Luckily things like multitouch within the browser and gallery have now been fully implemented and Nokia-own apps like the brilliant navigation software Ovi Maps now has full touch support works very well with the phone.

Summary

The N8 has proved that Nokia really has caught up it terms of hardware. There's a great system, an awesome camera, a nice screen and a functional design that's sure to stand out. Some of the software still needs to do a bit of catching up though before Nokia can seriously begin to reclaim their crown as kings of the mobile world.
