Although ultrasound technology is generally associated with the imaging of fetuses during pregnancy, there are many other applications for this technology in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. Medical sonography technician students take courses that prepare them to work directly with patients, interact with doctors and nurses, keep patient records and adjust and maintain equipment. Job duties of ultrasound and sonography technicians may also include preparing work schedules, evaluating equipment purchases and/or managing the ultrasound or diagnostic imaging department.
There are different levels of degrees and certificates for ultrasound careers. The curriculum for ultrasound degrees depends on what level of education you want to receive, which will affect the career opportunities that you have available to you.
