Sony Ait-5 Tape Systems Durability And Performance Compared With The Close Competitor Lto Ultrium
Business enterprises have to pay hefty price for data security breaches
. This price can be in terms of lost revenue and financial penalties under the industry & governments data retention laws. Some of the organizations with constrained financial resources might not be able to bounce back after data loss, and eventually get perished. So dont rely solely on the hard drives of workstations and servers. Backup their data periodically, and use this precious operational information whenever a disaster strikes your I.T center.
Sony, the worlds leading innovator in tape recording and backup industry, invented the AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape) for the demanding needs spanning across medium & small organizations. High performance AIT versions up to AIT5 provide a reliable and cost-efficient solution for all budgets and backup environments.
Close competitor of this AIT5 solution is LTO3, the third generation of Linear Tape Open format. Both these tape solutions are ideal for multi-functional data centers in medium & small companies. You can connect to a variety of workstations (low to high end) and entry level servers. Uncompressed data recording capacity of these backup tapes is 400 GB, but the AIT5 cartridge takes the lead with 240GB higher compressed capacity. LTO3 tape holds up to 800GB, and the compressed capacity for compact AIT5 reaches 1040GB. Sony has made this possible by elevating the compression capability of all AIT tape drive generations to 2.6:1.
Two durable models of AIT-5 have been designed to meet the long term security demands. The Sonys rewritable tape is SDX5-400C, and the other is SDX5-400W that protects sensitive data with its WORM (write once read many) functionality. Physical size of these tapes is much smaller, almost 1/3rd of rival tape formats. So the customers can squeeze more volumes of organizational data, and handle the pressure of rapidly-growing databases without increasing media shelf space.
The Sonys external and internal AIT5 drives feature dust protective bezels and ensure uninterrupted operations in harsh conditions. Their intelligent drive head track the ultra-fine tape reel at a faster rate (24MB/sec uncompressed), and shed lesser debris. That is why their mean time between failures (400,000 POH) is the best in midrange class. The highest MTBF amongst the rival tape drives is 250,000 hours.
Compatibility of AIT 5 drives is also superior, as it writes/reads four AIT media generations, which are AIT5, AIT4, AIT3 and AIT3Ex. So the organizations upgrade their system by making minimal investment, and lower the workload and media handling by using their previous AIT tapes for data recovery. Sony AIT5 tapes last longer (minimum 30,000 passes), whereas their ultra-fine base film reduces noise level and tape deterioration. AIT5 solution shortens processing time, allows storage consolidation and most importantly, features WORM technology that puts a stop to malicious and inadvertent data corruption. Sony AIT technology also supports automated tape library. It can pack more volume of data per unit of rack space. So the compactness of Sony AIT library plus the smaller size of AIT media makes it the most space-efficient solution available in medium & small range.
