Sony Building – An Experience Not To Be Missed
From Japanese pop culture to the Imperial Family
, Tokyo is the perfect blend of the new and traditional. With its tightly-clipped pace of life and its continuing search for the next new thing, nothing stays current in Tokyo for long periods of time. Sometimes, living in this metropolis can be exhausting in its changes, but underneath all the currents is the staid pride of Japanese inheritance that maintains its culture and traditions in a vitality that is unique to Tokyo itself.
The Sony building can be held up as the perfect example of Tokyo's outlook on living. Built in 1966 and designed by Yoshinobu Ashihara, a Japanese architect, it was first used as an information centre for the Sony Group's Products and Services Division. This would be the place people would come to experience the mind-boggling world of new technology being developed. Since then the building has been transformed into one of the most important landmarks in Ginza. Immaculately reflecting the architectural style of the postmodern era, it is a superb example of the Japanese towers of old.
This eight-story giant encompasses everything from shops and cafes to showrooms and some of the best restaurants in Tokyo. With an annual visitation of over 5.6 million people a year, it is more than a showroom or information centre; it's also a place of recreation where people gather just to spend the day. There are three basements that are dedicated solely to showrooms that house a dizzying array of equipment ranging from walkmans to TVs. PlayStation has its own floor on the sixth storey, and six of the other eight stories are dedicated to demonstrating their products. One can try anything that's on display on those floors, ranging from game consoles and high-definition televisions to new computer programs and- robots.
