Sony Ericsson Elm Is Sony's New Eco-phone

A new colour scheme has now been introduced to the Sony Ericsson Elm phone series

renowned for having less of an impact on the environment, the new Sony Elm Silver edition has now joins the original black model to further expand the colour options for this eco-friendly handset.

The problem has been that previous mobile phones that claim to have less impact on the environment have been of a basic specification and the consumer take up slow, Sony Ericsson looks to have addressed this with the new Sony Ericsson Elm handset by incorporating good features and an appealing design.

Manufactured from recycled plastics with no hazardous chemicals, packaged with a low power consumption charger and new applications such as 'Walk Mate Eco' and a 'Green Calculator' make the new Sony Elm one of the most environmentally friendly handsets on the market.

Features include 3.5G support for fast internet browsing, a 5.0 mega pixel camera with flash, autofocus and geo-tagging, a GPS receiver with Google Maps for navigation and route finding, WiFi, a multimedia player, FM radio and expandable memory.

The Sony Ericsson Elm offers a practical if somewhat standard layout to the front of the handset, but turn the phone around and the design of the reverse is curved to fit the hand, weighing in at just 90g and measuring 110 x 45 x 14mm the Sony Elm is extremely compact and lightweight in comparison to many other 3.5G phones.

It has been said that the best way to make environmentally friendly mobile phones is simply for the user to keep the phone for longer and then at the end of its life make sure to recycle to handset, however this is an issue in an industry where technology moves very fast and models become dated very quickly.

The Sony Ericsson Elm manages to pack in features and specifications that mean it will not be obsolete like many other lower specification eco-phones and hopefully be a practical device for t least a couple of years before being recycled.

Although there is no direct competition in terms of features from other mobile phones claiming eco-friendly credentials, there are a number of rival handsets able to compete with the Elm's normal specifications. These include other 5.0 mega pixel camera phones such as the HTC Legend, Nokia X6, LG BL40, Nokia N97 Mini and from within the manufacturers own ranks the Sony Ericsson C905.

The new Silver edition of the Sony Ericsson Elm has now been made available on the O2 network, there are further plans for this latest colour scheme to be launched on Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone as well as a Pay As You Go release from third party mobile phone retailers over the coming days.
