Sony Ericsson Satio Review

The Satio was launched late 2009 after being previewed as far back as February last year

, so its been a long time coming for fan of Ericsson phones and smart phones in general. Even the quickest glance at the Satio will reveal that its been worth waiting for though; the phone comes packed with a brand operating system and a large range of different gadgets and media options that should keep media junkies amused while holding on to the phones core features.

The exciting thing about the Satio is that it brings together two previously impressive phone brands; the Walkman and the Cybershot, known for their appeal for people look for photo and music phones respectively. Previously you had to choose between having a phone that took great photos or a phone designed with music in mind. The idea behind the Satio was to bring the two brands together along with a new operating system to power everything.

The phone is small and very light, though the large camera makes one end slightly thicker than the other. In the hand the phone feels natural and all of the functions are available with one hand. As with most touch screen phones theres not much in the way of actual hardware buttons on the front of the Satio handset; the front has three buttons which power calling, hanging up and accessing the menu.

Unlike most touch screen phones however theres a range of different buttons down the sides, which include unlocking, usb ports, MicroSD slot and a range of different camera controls. The zoom buttons for the camera double up as volume buttons when playing music.

The interfaces uses Symbian S60 5th Edition, although its been quite heavily edited by Ericsson this time around to make it more easier to use and, frankly, a lot more visually similar to Android. The phones touch screen interface isnt quite as perfect as we would hope for, but its made up for by the quick 600MHz processor which handles everything you can throw at it without problem.

The camera is exactly what you would expect from a Cybershot phone, taking 12.1 MP pictures that looking stunning for a mobile phone. Is it quite up there with average priced compact cameras? Not quite yet, but its about as close as you can get right now to have a device thats really worthy of the title of camera phone, and if you love taking pictures the various features on the camera such as intelligent auto capture, touch focusing, face recognition, sports and macro modes, and so on.

The media capability of the device follows the camera in living up to its branding, and the interface is both slick and practical. Side buttons mean you dont have to constantly load up the entire screen and unlock the phone just to skip tracks or change volume and the overall experience is great, let down slightly only by the decision to use a proprietary headphone port rather than the standard 3.5mm, meaning youll need to buy an adapter if you want to purchase a pair of non Sony branded earphones.

Overall, the Satio combines picture taking and multimedia capability into a very capable and versatile handset. Its lack of Android means its got less configuration options and application available then other smart phones, but the Symbian OS does its job well. As a camera phone its really head and shoulders above just about everything else youll find on the market and as a media device its one of the more well designed and capable smart phones around.
