Sony Ericsson Xperia Play vs Xbox LIVE Enabled Windows Phones
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play vs Xbox LIVE Enabled Windows Phones
With the launch of Windows Phone 7 towards the end of 2010 Microsoft was keen to capitalise on its successful games franchise by injecting it as a core feature in its dwindling mobile OS platform. Windows Phone 7 marked a significant revamp of the mobile Windows OS and Xbox LIVE marked one of the key features that was to be a unique selling point for all WP7 smartphones. Naturally, Microsoft has been keen to keep Xbox functionality to themselves in an attempt to boost popularity of Windows Phone 7.
Microsoft's traditional enemy in the games console world has always been Sony. With the release of their original PlayStation back in 1996 they managed to successfully dominate the market that had previously been occupied by Nintendo and Sega, pushing the former to the sidelines and making the latter almost an historical relic. The PlayStation brand has become immensely successful with millions of consoles sold and now the Japanese electronics giant is hoping to muscle in on the emerging mobile gaming market too, with their new Xperia Play handset.
Sony has also been involved in the phone industry for some years too due to their partnership with Swedish phone manufacturer Ericsson and it is a surprise that they have not made any serious attempt at this before, considering that their PSP handheld consoles have provided a similar functionality for some years now. The Xbox and PlayStation both have their bands of loyal followers although many hardcore gamers will probably possess both consoles, and so it is with their smartphone offerings that these two gaming consoles are really to be pitted against each other, as less people are likely to opt for two smartphones.
While there are already several Xbox LIVE enabled WP7 handsets on offer there is currently only one PlayStation Phone, the Xperia Play. There will no doubt be more PlayStation handsets over the coming years but it is easy to imagine that Xbox phones will be released at a much faster rate than their PlayStation rivals as this is not considered their core functionality.
This is the main advantage of Sony Ericsson's gaming phone, it is designed for gaming. With a slide-out PSP style control pad you are provided with the ability to play full PlayStation games with rumours of titles such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare and God of War being pegged for release. With no such control pad on Windows Phone 7 handsets Xbox LIVE is limited to touchscreen games only, which will prove to be a competitive disadvantage until an actual Xbox Phone with corresponding control pad sees release if in fact it ever will.
It could be argued that the real battle here is not between the different console brands but the phone operating systems that they run on. Microsoft has developed a bit of a bad name in the mobile phone world due to their earlier Windows Mobile system, although Windows Phone 7 is a genuine step forward for the company. But the Xperia Play runs on Google's Android, which automatically has a larger following of loyal supporters who would consider this a deal breaker when looking for a gaming phone. Either way, the presence of both console giants in the mobile phone industry should make for some pretty interesting developments in the world of mobile gaming in coming years and who knows, perhaps we will one day see a Nintendo smartphone too.
