Sony vs. Microsoft Gaming

Sony vs. Microsoft Gaming

Sony vs. Microsoft Gaming

Many are saying the competition is on between Microsoft and Sony in the phone slash portable gaming world. Why are the two compared with one another? Possibly due to the fact they have similar products. Sony is preparing to launch a Playstation Portable Phone which compares a lot to the Windows 7 phone recently launched by Microsoft.

How does the Windows 7 phone compare to a PSP unit, you might ask? Both are focused on gaming, with PSP specializing in Playstation games and Microsoft specializing in Xbox Live. Both are phones, both have other gadgets, so who is the best?

Breaking it down, first there is the Windows 7 phone. This phone recently came out and has had nice reviews. People are enjoying its intuitive design and interface. For those who love their games, having a phone and gaming system in one has been a big plus. Microsoft not only integrated Xbox but Xbox Live, their social community into their mobile phone. One can play games while connecting with others.

The Sony PSP phone on the other hand, which isn't even out but has had numerous photos and information online, has been rated as unattractive. The Sony device is said to run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread but doesn't have the visual pop to it. On the plus side, the Sony PSP phone has quality titles with more perfected control schemes. Being a slider phone, it contains a PSP styled gamepad under a large touchscreen display. The device also has dual analog controls. What else comes with the Sony PSP phone? It will have the standard 1GHz Qualcomm CPU, 512MB of RAM and 1GB of ROM. The screen is between 3.7 and 4.1 inches according to Engadget. The multi-touch trackpad runs horizontally across the lower portion of the phone and in-between the standard PSP controls.

The other downside of the yet released Sony PSP is the missing Sony Memory Stick, something all PSP models come standard with.

Back to the Windows Phone 7. This phone is running on the familiar OS along with using familiar games and apps. Microsoft will stick to their own proprietary graphics as well. But it is the Xbox Live features people are more interested in. With Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7 one will have a console-like gaming experience with one's user avatar displayed in 3D fashion. The user will also be able to interact with the avatar, but view their game score and leaderboards, message Xbox LIVE friends, and Spotlight. There will even be multiplayer (turn-based) gaming with live multiplayer function.

In addition to the gaming side, there is the phone's multimedia hubs, Music and Video, Pictures and appearance and functionality to Zune HD. Users can purchase music from Zune Marketplace. There is also a pictures hub that displays user's Facebook and Windows Live photo albums along with photos taken with the phone's camera. You can upload photos to social networks and comment on online photos.

So who will win this battle, Sony or Microsoft? Guess one will have to wait and see when they can actually compare the two side-by-side.
