Sooraj Barjatya - Director Of Bollywood
There was a time, in the early 1990s, when video piracy had started spreading like a deadly virus
, on a mission to kill Hindi Cinema lovers. Satellite TV had by then, too, threatened the survival of the Indian film industry. But, his films infused a new life into Indian Cinema by bringing viewers back to cinema halls.
Sooraj Barjatya instilled in people a renewed love for films by creating two of the biggest grosser ever in the history of the Indian film industry; Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994). Sooraj, by the 10th grade, chanced upon a few Raj Kapoor films and after seeing them, had decided to become a film maker.
While in college, Sooraj beheld the spectacular musical classic, The Sound of Music . He could wait no longer to hide his passion from films, so he wrote a long letter to his grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya, to declare that he wanted to be a director.
His grandfather, thrilled, sent copies of the letter to his uncles and his father. At the end of the letter, was added the most inspiring line, You have to make a filmmaker out of him.
Sooraj, after watching Mahesh Bhatt art film Arth (1982), found it so beautiful that he decided to work with him. In the year 1984, for Rajshri Production own film, Saaransh , Sooraj assisted Mahesh Bhatt. From the first day of shooting, Sooraj learnt a lot many things as an assistant director and a human being as well.
His father was a producer and all through his school life he had seen his father struggle with directors who were not as passionate and sincere about film making. He knew of instances when they neither understood nor cared about what his father was saying.
Sooraj wanted to make one film where he would be proud of seeing his own passion carried throughout. And that film was Maine Pyar Kiya , his debut film as a director; at the very young age of 24. He made his directorial debut with Maine Pyar Kiya starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree.
A magical romantic tale entwined with complex family drama, the film went to become one of the biggest grosser of the last century of Indian Cinema. The success of Maine Pyar Kiya brought people back into the evaded theatres (well, almost evaded) again.
Sooraj had a dream launch. But, more importantly, with this film, Salman Khan had become an overnight star. And soon enough, they had to reunite. Maine Pyar Kiya boosted the confidence in Sooraj. He knew that he wanted to continue with the dream beginning to his passionate film making career. There were too much of interviews, too much of publicity, but no scripts at all.
None of them appealed. So, he decided to pen the script himself. When Sooraj had the trade show of Hum Aapke Hain KAun , he had become the laughing stock. He was then ridiculed by those who saw the film, that it was more of a marriage video, and it had no suspense, no villain. This was his second film after a long gap of 5 years.
Written by Sooraj himself (and of course directed by him), that starred Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit. He could have gone wrong. He was terribly shaken. But when the film released, it slowly and slowly gained momentum. It made the overseas market for Bollywood more lucrative.
It fought satellite TV. This ridiculed film went on to become the fourth highest grossing film ever in the history of Indian cinema. A family drama, boasted with super hit music, the film had very sensitive emotional values about family and marriage. Sooraj had known right from the start, that this film would be special.
His next film Hum Saath Saath Hain came at a point where he suddenly had to face a tragedy his mother death. More like a modern day Ramayana with an ensemble cast including Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, Sooraj in way, through the film, was telling the audience: to value the time they spend with their family (which he himself regretted of not having spent enough time with his mother). The film was a hit, but not in the league of his earlier two mega blockbusters.
His fourth film, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon , starring Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan, was again a film based on family affairs, marriages, etc. But the Indian audience, had by then, come of age; the film was not received with the same warmth by the audience, who had moved on from formulaic, conventional family genres. The movie failed miserably at the box office. This was the first film of Sooraj Barjatya to fail.
sooraj is a Marwari Jain. He handles his home production Rajhsri Productions, which produces and distributes films. Family values and emotions are an integral part of his life. He is a very spiritual person. He believes in karma and conscience.
Sooraj feels that the most wonderful thing in life is that he can make films and influence people emotions in some way. And, that is the greatest gift of his.
