Sound Engineering 101
Most music lovers could rattle off endless bits of information about their favorite guitar player
, singer, or drum player. Few, however, would even know the name of the sound engineer, yet it is one of the most important roles in the show. The role of sound engineer goes far beyond plugging in equipment or adjusting the volume. It requires real training which can be gained at various sound engineering schools.
Sound engineers need be able take on practically any role in the show if it's necessary to make it work. So what skills so you need in order to become a sound engineer?
The first thing all sound engineers need to learn about is the different types of equipment necessary to make a show successful. This equipment might include amplifiers, microphones, audio lines, monitors and mixing boards along with many others. Sound engineers need to learn exactly how each of these instruments works so that they can effectively manage the sound during a show.
On top of understanding the equipment, sound engineers also need to learn about how their job functions differently in different types of venues and with different styles of music. The sound engineer's job is much different, for example, at an opera house than at a private performance in a club.
Beyond the technical skills are the softer skills necessary to function successfully as a sound engineer. Since putting on a live show requires an entire team effort, the sound engineer must be able to function within this team and communicate effectively with any number of people. They have to be able to handle face-to-face communications with the team as well as collaborate with other people at the venue before and after the show. They also need to be savvy enough in business as well as written communication to deal with contracts, set-up instructions, and various other business documents.
The sound engineer must also be effective not only at communicating within the team but also with balancing their needs and wishes effectively. With that many people involved there will be many different opinions about how the show should sound, so he needs to be able to translate these conflicting opinions into one unified sound for the audience.
In the end the sound engineer will need to play a variety of roles, so a solid education is necessary to prepare for this.
Sound engineering can be a fun and rewarding career, but you will need to be equipped with a sound understanding of the industry. Take the time to research music engineering schools in your area and perhaps visit a few. You'll want to be prepared anything the job throws at you, so take the time to get the education first.
