Soundtrack for Tel Aviv

For the past few months I have been running around the noisy hub that is Tel Aviv, Israel researching restaurants for Taste TLV, a company that reviews restaurants in Tel Aviv. With all of the activity and hubbub around me I sometimes like to retreat into my music. The following songs are my favorites to listen to while exploring because they fit the city so well.

1.Erykah Badu- On & On

Once while walking by the beach and listening to my ipod early in my stay in Tel Aviv, Erykah Badu popped up on my shuffle and I realized that Ms. Badu is so much like the city of Tel Aviv. She is funky and sensuous but on the other hand she is aggressive and a little rough around the edges. Tel Aviv emulates all of these Baduesque qualities. You can see the beauty and the rough edges in the offbeat but alluring street art that is painted on dilapidated buildings. This paradox is also apparent in the pretty, hip women wearing coquettish pearls and lace who will give no thought to pushing you aside if you take too long while waiting in line. There must be some recognition of these commonalities because I hear Erykah Badu being played in all of the restaurants in Tel Aviv!

2. Brazilian Girls- Internacional

Tel Aviv is truly an international city and like the Brazilian Girls, who sing in English, French, Spanish, and German, the city is multiligual. On the street you can hear a variety of languages, from Russian to Spanish, Amharic (Ethiopian) to Thai. You can also see the range of nationalities in the plethora of diverse ethic food in the city; you can find a Tel Aviv restaurant to please almost any global palate.

3. Daft Punk- Digital Love

Tel Aviv is powered by it's high tech industry. Tel Aviv cafes are full of people typing away on their laptops and everyone and their mother is working on a hot new Internet start-up or has devised a clever Facebook App.

4. Balkan Beat Box- Move it

The upbeat, colorful sound of BBB is a perfect match for the balagan (the constantly used word for mess or craziness) that is streets of Tel Aviv. Walking down the busy sidewalk is sometimes treacherous; with a constant rush of bikes and mopeds, cars parked half up the curb, and people moving at greatly varied paces.

5. Nina Simone- Feeling Good

In comparison to the tension filled, religious and governmental capital of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv is the cultural capital of Israel and it is concerned with just feeling good. People here live in the moment, this is most apparent in the hedonist nightlife. When the sun goes down Tel Aviv is at it's prime, pulsing with the energy of it's bars, music venues, and dance clubs.
