Many salespeople out there, especially the ones who are new in the business market

, dont know how to find in-depth information about their product line. Knowing the right sources of product information enable any business owner to get the right customer and right profit. Salespeople can generally find all the product information they need through four main sources:

From direct experience. Using a product is probably the best source of direct experience. So, some businesses offer their salespeople discounts to encourage them to buy and use the companys merchandise for their own. You can also get direct experience with a product by studying display models or visiting the manufacturing facility to see how the product is made. For instance, if you are running a printing business but what you do know is only the printing of simple bookmarks, you need to go to large printing companies that have large machines and offer bulk printing of newsletters and bookmarks, posters and flyers. From observing or if by chance they let you use the actual printing machines; for sure you will gain a good experience on printing not just simple bookmarks but also custom bookmarks.

From printed materials. These include user manuals, manufacturers warranties and guarantees, catalogs, and other promotional materials. These papers consist of the step-by-step procedure on how to make a certain product and others include the materials needed. By reading all of these materials, you will have an idea on how to make a certain product, or rather, how to improve the quality of the existing ones. You can collect catalogs and brochures from similar businesses so that you can benchmark what are the other products that they are offering that are lacking from your store.

For clothing items or products that are packaged in boxes, bottles, or cans, labels provide important information. This is important especially when you are in the food business wherein you need to know the main ingredients and some secret recipes to make one food more appetizing and delicious. Labels from cans and boxes also provide information on the nutritional content that most customers are concerned with. So, you better have one of those in your product label.

From other people. Friends, relatives, and customers can share their experiences with you. They can tell you what they liked about the product, as well as how they used it. Co-workers, supervisors, and manufacturers representatives who have extensive product knowledge can share their expertise with you as well. You can meet with large corporations and interview the president or founder to ask some advice and tips on how they become successful in their field. Many of these successful entrepreneurs are very much willing to help especially others who are just starting to get their feet wet in the business world.

From formal training. Most industrial sales representatives receive much of their product knowledge through formal training sessions. (Some sales representatives spend several months attending classes and observing experienced sales representatives before going out on their own.) In retail settings, training is likely to be less structured. Information might be funneled informally to individuals or small groups as new merchandise is received or selected for promotion.

These sources are proven effective and efficient, so make sure you know them by heart before you get into the next sale.
