South of Hollywood Road (SOHO) - Hong Kong's Premier Entertainment District

Known as the entertainment hub of Hong Kong, the SOHO district has garnered quite a reputation for itself. The name SOHO stands for South of Hollywood Road and it stands within the borders of Sheung Wan in the mid-levels and includes Robinson Road as well. One of the unique features of the SOHO district is the massive outdoor public escalator that is serviced by the district. The area itself though is a jumble of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, antique stores, art galleries and residential houses. The easiest way to reach the district is through the escalator that has drawn so much popularity to the place.

Home to Asia's premier fulltime comedy club the TakeOut Comedy Club, this place has definitely shed its boring past and embraced the future with arms wide open. SOHO district as a name and more importantly an icon did not have its beginnings till 1996. This change in name can be attributed to Thomas Goetz a restaurant owner. He was also the forerunner of the first business group in SOHO. There was some opposition for the use of the name as there were others who preferred the name "Hong Kong Theme Restaurant District". This was so because they were wary of the fact that London too had a district by the name of SOHO. But as of now, the name seems to have stuck.

No different than the rest of Hong Kong, SOHO too manages a precarious balance between the Chinese traditions and culture as well as the modern turn towards glitz and glamour. It could be seen that the Cantonese traditions of old have been rather cocooned because of the uprising in bars, boutiques and cafes. But this contrast merely enhances SOHO's appeal and only serves to draw in more and more crowds. The Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail has been developed so that interested tourists would be able to witness way of life in Hong Kong of old. Sad to say though, many of the historical points have given way to the newer more modern concrete buildings.
