Southwold Hotels Guide

Southwold offers a diverse range of hotels for visitors to choose from

, from the small and cosy to the grand and unique, promising to make your stay an unforgettable one.

Southwold is a refreshingly unspoilt coastal resort that is quiet and full of character - a paradise for the walker, the naturalist, and the birdwatcher. Situated on a hill that gently rises from the Blyth Valley, the town is virtually an island, being surrounded by the River Blyth to the south and Buss Creek to the north. This has resulted in limited town development, helping to retain Southwold's old world charm.

The dramatic coastline and the town's beautiful architecture make it a popular attraction throughout the year. Southwold's beach is immaculately kept and is a regular Blue Flag winner. Also to be enjoyed are Southwold's cosy pub lunches, isolated walks and an interesting selection of independent shops selling antiques, crafts and gifts, as well as a variety of art galleries, boutiques and jewellers. Southwold remains a firm holiday favourite and people come back, year after year.

Crown Hotel, Southwold

Situated on the High Street just a few moments away from the seaside, the Crown Hotel is an exciting and intimate combination of small hotel, wine bar, pub and restaurant. Visitors can relax before lunch or dinner in the snug 'Back Bar', which is always buzzing with a lively informality.

The food is famously good and the wine list wonderful, earning the Crown such achievements as being named 'Wine Pub of the Year' by the Morning Advertiser and 'Central & East Anglia's Best Hotel of the Year' by Les Routiers. The Crown's chef has a close relationship with local farmers and fishermen to ensure all food and produce is as fresh, local and as seasonal as possible. Booking early is advised, as there are just 14 bedrooms available, and the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Swan Hotel, Southwold

The Swan Hotel is a wonderful retreat that exudes timeless style - but still has every modern comfort. Each of our 42 bedrooms in The Swan Hotel is unique - from its carefully chosen decor to its own viewpoint on Southwold; across red tiled rooftops to the sea, onto the bustling Market Square, or overlooking the garden. All the rooms are beautifully furnished, and the bathrooms are wonderful retreats.

Visitors can catch up in the bar or enjoy local produce, beautifully cooked, in the restaurant - which has two AA rosettes. The a la carte menu is flexible depending on whether you wish to enjoy a three course lunch or dinner, or a lighter meal. Or, if you'd prefer less formal surroundings, enjoy the bar menu. You'll find traditional favourites as well as a range of contemporary dishes to choose from, along with an extensive Wine List suitable for all tastes and budgets.

Sutherland House Hotel and Restaurant, Southwold

Sutherland House is a fascinating building, rich in history and offers a resplendent venue for drinks, meals, functions and fabulous rooms. The hotel has been lovingly restored to include a gorgeous environment with wood burning stoves, rich fabrics and lovingly prepared food. The bedrooms have respected the shape of the original rooms and are therefore of a very generous size, and have fabulous original features. The accommodation is boutique, but in an amazing medieval building truly unlike any other hotel bedrooms in Southwold.

Sutherland House is not just a fine dining establishment; it is a neighbourhood restaurant which serves local food for local people. It has been awarded two rosettes by the AA for the quality of food. Guests are welcome to drop in for a glass of wine and a plate of tapas in front of the fire; a gourmet sandwich; a home-made Red Poll beef burger, or a British classic dish - or to come for a three course meal.
