Soviet Posters - A Look At Vintage Socialist Propaganda

It has been said that one of the great legacies of the socialist regime of the Soviet

Union which was in power from 1917 to 1991, were the Soviet posters depicting political and social propaganda for the Soviet masses. The posters encouraged Soviets to work hard and plow thorough any adversity for the betterment of all. The posters feature stern faced men and women and render stern messages such as "Keep Your Mouth Shut." Another poster features a smiling image of Stalin with the words "The Way to Posterity." If you are interested in the artwork of the Soviet period, a good place to start your collection would be with vintage Soviet posters featuring socialist propaganda.

Men, women and even children were depicted in these Soviet posters. For example, a stern faced woman depicts the woman's ability to work just as hard as a man. The Soviet government also tried to communicate that it was "better" than capitalist countries such as the United States by depicting two young musicians side by side on one poster. One child hangs his head dejectedly while the other stands tall playing his violin. The message is that the Soviet Union will embrace and support a young musician's talent while musicians in Capitalist countries are left to fend for themselves, often with no success. This type of vintage poster can be a valuable commodity and a valuable addition to any collector's collection.

Prints of Soviet posters can cost anywhere between twenty dollars to upwards of a hundred dollars or more. Obviously, a truly vintage Soviet poster from the Soviet era can be worth a lot more and depending on the number of such posters in circulation, can be quite valuable. A large collection of vintage Soviet propaganda posters can also be quite valuable, especially the longer a collector holds on to the collection.

Of course, not all Soviet posters can be characterized as propaganda posters. Some of the posters are meant to be educational or to promote literacy. Some of the posters depict messages against the use of alcohol and/or against the use of tobacco, both which became noticeable social problems in the socialist Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was an interesting and dark place during the time of the socialist regime. Finding propaganda, educational or social posters from the time can be quite thrilling and can become a wonderful conversation piece for any person interested in collecting art of that time period.
