Today's Bodrum stands on what was known in the ancient world as the city of Halikarnassus. It was here that a famous structure, the Mausoleum of Halikarnassus once stood, noted as a Seven Wonder of the Ancient World. Although the mausoleum no longer exists in its entirety, parts of it can be seen in London's British Museum along with sketches of what the mausoleum is known to have looked like.
If you want a dose of something ancient, you can visit the Bodrum Amphitheatre that was cut from the side of a hillside and once held up to 13,000 spectators; or the Myndos Gate, a set of ancient city gates at which a great battle took place by Alexander the Great in his attempt to take the city.
One of the biggest attractions in Bodrum aside from its much-sought out beach space is the Bodrum Castle. Also known as the Castle of St. Peter, it was built in the early 1400's and is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the world. Today it holds the Museum of Underwater Archaeology which is dedicated to many excavations that have been made along the Turkish coast a fascinating, unique exhibition.
Last but not least, a visit to Bodrum isn't complete without seeing the white-washed stone windmills located just outside Bodrum towards Gumbet. Used in the mid 18th century, the windmills were used until recently in the 1970's to grind flour. Today they're part of the picturesque landscape in and around Bodrum.
