Spain Holiday Rentals For The Roman Heritage Of The Town And Caves Of Almunecar
The Romans built during the 1st century AD four miles of water conduits in the SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS valleys of the Rio Seco and the Rio Verde
. Near to Granada in Andalucia, remarkably, the aqueducts are still standing: four of them are still in use after 2,000 years and have become popular tourist attractions. They were adapted by the Moors during their time on the peninsula during their 800 year rule and they served the needs of crop irrigation.
Originally the Roman water supply had served the town and recent excavations of the town centre have shown evidence of a fifth aqueduct along with ancient Roman baths. The amount of water that was supplied via the aqueducts was to serve the needs of a large fish salting and curing industry that grew whilst under Roman rule. It was not until the 1970s when the large factory was discovered in the Majuelo Flower Gardens. A small portion of the discovery has been turned into a museum which demonstrates the trade that once flourished under the influence of the Roman Empire. Now the museum has scrupulously preserved the ancient ruins, giving the tourist a better idea of the dimensions of the industry. In the past it was obvious that the industry needed huge quantities of fish and sea salt: these were all bought in from local villages and towns along the coast and a lot of smaller fishing communities were created to cover the huge production that was needed.
The Romans built the first castle of Saint Miguel although over time different cultures have added and rebuilt the castle, causing the original signs of Roman construction to be obliterated. Other constructions in the area suffered the same fate: these include a bridge from the castle across to the Penon del Santo which is believed to have had a massive 100 foot tall arch; it had survived until at least 1800 before being destroyed.
Just below the castle is the Cueva de Siete Palacios: in English the "Cave of the Seven Palaces". The area had always been a place for the poor with the caves acting as cheap housing for those that could not afford to live anywhere else. It was during the 1970s that the local government decided something had to be done with the caves, either to clean them up and add electricity or just to remove them to make space for low cost construction. Once the occupants had been removed it was then realised that what was originally thought to have been just caves were in fact buildings of some kind.
It was not obvious at first glance but then with archaeological help it was realised that the walls were of Roman origin and that the construction was once a palace, one of the largest in Andalucia. Now that the caves have been restored, the town of Almunecar has itself a town museum. The village that once saw the Arab invasion of 711 is now a popular tourist attraction on their
