Speaking The Chinese Language: Learn By Doing

Let's face the truth and reality of the situation

. Mandarin Chinese has a bit of a reputation for being a difficult language to learn. However, speaking the Chinese language is similar to writing poetry, playing music, or painting landscapes if you don't ever try, you'll never succeed. And, with steady effort and regular practice, you will find yourself well on your way to mastering the language and becoming fluent.

The first time you try to say a Chinese word out loud can be a tough hurdle to clear for beginners. The noise that comes out of your mouth might not sound like anything you've ever heard, and you may feel like a caricature of a Chinese speaker at best and like a maladjusted whale at worst.Try to remember that your mouth and facial muscles have been conditioned to make English language sounds for years, and spoken Chinese demands some completely new behaviors and vocalizations no wonder it feels so uncomfortable and ridiculous at first!

Fortunately, the first time you utter a Chinese word, you're well on your way to overcoming this obstacle. You can add to your muscle memory and train your ear to accept the sounds of spoken Chinese, but it will take practice and effort. As you continue to learn you will also start to realize that in addition to training for vocal and facial muscles you may have to change how you breathe when speaking entire sentences. Because Mandarin is a tonal language it can take a long time for westerners to change their speaking styles to accommodate the ups & downs of so many different tones. But it is simply something that becomes more natural with practice.

While there is some value in practicing new words and sentence patterns by yourself in front of the mirror, at some point you will need to go out and actually speak Chinese with other people. Dont be shy or nervous - be fearless! If you're not in a Chinese-speaking country, contact your local university's Chinese student association to find a conversation partner or look for them online to do skype language exchanges. You can also visit Chinese restaurants, bookstores, or shopping districts and greet people in Chinese. Most Chinese speakers respond enthusiastically to students of their language, and you'll be surprised how much linguistic and cultural insight you can gain in brief, casual conversations.

Making a daily effort to speak in Chinese will also help you fully engage with the language. Grammar drills and vocabulary flashcards are necessary learning tools, but actually using the Chinese language satisfies a basic human need to communicate with others. The act of speaking also helps rewire the language into your brain so that its not simply a memorization exercise but that it becomes embedded as a method of communication. In addition, the social aspects of speaking will give your language learning more personal meaning and may result in new friendships, interests, and opportunities.Regularly speaking Chinese must be a priority for students of the language it might even turn out to be the most rewarding aspect of your study.
