Special Surprise Picnic Made Easy

It's a beautiful summer morning, the sun is shining and the kids are still asleep for a few more minutes

. I stepped outside with a cup of tea to enjoy a few moments of quiet before the daily action begins. The birds are chirping, and the squirrels are skittering around when the soft scent of honeysuckle fills the air and reminds me of a day long ago.

It was a day when I was a child laughing and playing in the park with my sister and newly acquired friends. It was a special day, an unexpected day when my mom decided to take us to the nearest park. I can't remember a lot about that day, other than taking a long walk with my mom and sister. My mom and older sister were carrying a couple bags and only they knew what was in them.

Once we arrived at the park I distinctly remember excitedly riding on what I called a Merry Go Round. Not the kind that carnivals or fairs have, it was the old metal round kind that had bars that you held onto. I would run around and around and then jump on and let my mom do the rest of the pushing. There were teeter totters, swings, and slides. We had so much fun!

It's incredible that our sense of smell can recreate a wonderful memory. I remember the park having these pretty yellow flowers along the entry of the park. My sister and I took a few of the flowers and sucked the honey out of them. I didn't know at the time they were called honeysuckle. I haven't thought about this memory for a long time. I wonder if that's the reason why I planted honeysuckle along our fence.

You have probably already guessed what was in the bags my mom and sister were carrying. It was a small picnic lunch! Oh what fun! It wasn't an elaborate picnic; it was just some simple peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, along with some apples, and kool-aid. How simple is that? I often think about going on a picnic, but then talk myself out of it because it seems like too much work. I hear the kids stirring; I better get in and fix some breakfast. You know what? I think I will surprise them with a picnic!

I think I will do what my mom did. I will just make a few sandwiches, chips, fruit, and drinks. It's what I would make them for lunch so why not just pack it in my plastic lined bag and add some ice in a baggie to keep it cool. Right before lunch I will put the food in the car without the kids seeing. Then I will tell them we have to run some errands, they won't be too happy with that but when I turn into the park they will be ecstatic! What a fun day this will be!
