A high percentage of individuals who live in and around a very large city depend on public transportation or their own legs to get them from point A to point B. Very few own and operate their own automobiles. This means that taking care of your "means of motivation" is important. Problems related to your lower extremities are not restricted to the part of your body that you normally insert into your shoe, although that is a major player in this field of medicine. The problems can also involve anything below the knee, including the bones and muscles of the lower leg as well as the ankles. The list of disorders is lengthy, but usually the reason for visiting a physician is related to your ability to navigate in and around a large city.

Externally, there can be problems with the skin. These problems may be due to discomfort from the over production of skin, normally called a callus. It is possible over time to have a buildup of fungus under the toenail which is quite difficult to eradicate with the use of common over-the-counter fungal treatments.

Problems with the bone and tendon structure inside the lower extremities might be the most well know, if not the most common reasons to seek help to relieve pain. These include disorders that cause sometimes unbearable pain symptoms, which result in visiting a specialized professional. Such problems include sports injuries, arch disorders, arthritis, ankle injuries, heel problems, and soft tissue tumors, just to name a few.

Finally, one of the more difficult problems to treat exists as a result of diabetes. There are doctors whose practice is specifically geared toward diabetic care. The problem is due to the circulatory veins and arteries. Left untreated, diabetics can develop gangrene in their lower extremities, sometimes resulting in amputation. If your or your loved ones need specialized care in any of these areas, do not hesitate to consult a professional. It may require a visit to your primary care doctor first, but do not be bashful about asking to see a specialist.
