Specialty Absorbent Mats And Health Risks In Spills
In responding to an oil spill, the immediate concern is to minimize the overall impact the spill may have on natural and economic resources
. The various types of resources and their degree of importance will affect the kind of response options to be used. Moreover, the general impact of the oil spill would have to be determined as well. Combating oil spills can be done effectively with the use of specialty absorbent mats and wraps.
One such health risk is heat exhaustion. A person suffering from heat exhaustion generally exhibits such symptoms as headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, thirst and confusion. This is often accompanied by heavy sweating and a body temperature exceeding 100.4F. Personnel who are afflicted with heat exhaustion should be assisted away from the hot area and provided with liquids to drink. Any excessive clothing that hinders cooling down must be removed, which includes shoes and socks.
The employee must be allowed to cool down, and administered with cold compresses to the head, face and neck. If possible, his head, face and neck must be washed with cold water. Encourage frequent sips of cool water. Workers with signs of heat exhaustion must be brought to a clinic or emergency room to be provided with medical evaluation and treatment. The worker must be accompanied by at least one other person until help arrives.
Prolonged physical labor in hot working environments often lead to muscular pain known as heat cramps. Heat cramps are generally a result of a serious decrease of body salts and fluid, which usually occurs during sweating. Employees suffering from heat cramps must prevent further fluid loss by drinking water in intervals of around 15 to 20 minutes.
One of the most common health issues in hot working environments is heat rash. Heat rash is marked by clusters of red pimples or small blisters. These rashes often appear on the neck, upper chest, under the breasts, in the groin area, and around the elbow. An employee with heat rash should be taken to a cooler, less humid area. The rash should be kept dry by applying powder. The use of ointments and creams should be avoided in cases of heat rash. Substances that can make the skin warm or moist may aggravate the condition.
The process in selecting the appropriate response methods should take into account the potential of each method to minimize the environmental consequences of the spill. The result of this selection should be the implementation of the particular method that reduces consequences in the given situation most effectively.
