Counseling older adults presents a complex and challenging array of issues and circumstances with which the mental health practitioner must work. This can be rewarding for counselors who are willing to set aside negative societal stereotypes and engage these clients in the process of growth and healing. In addition, the experience of counseling older adults can also deepen counselors awareness of their own aging and, hopefully, generate a voice of care, compassion, and advocacy for the needs of this special population.
