Speech of Congress President on Day2 of the AICC Plenary Session
Mrs.Gandhi said that she has a special place in her heart for such dedicated Congress workers who may feel that their number has not yet come or who have not yet been adjusted in the party or the government but still they continue to work hard for the party with all commitment and devotion. Mrs. Gandhi said that Congress people occupying positions of power should learn some lessons from the selfless service of these innumerable dedicated workers.
Remembering Late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi, Congress President said that the memories of the Congress Centenary Celebrations at Mumbai 25 years ago are still vivid wherein he revolutionized the thought process of the nation. His comforting and reassuring vision is still remembered, she added.
Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said that this phase of Congress history is once again very critical where is it is imperative to rekindle the social empowerment and collective energies. She said that this Plenary session should give a call to the nation to announce that Congress's commitment is genuine and its dedication resolute.
..It's absolutely essential that we confront our political opponents aggressively. Since 2004, when we formed the UPA government, we have accomplished a great deal of work. Many of the promises that we have made to electorate both in 2004 and 2009 have been fulfilled and we are committed to fulfilling many other promises. I can say with pride that we have simply no reason to have any doubt on our record. We must all be proud of what we have accomplished.
Our record stands up visibly, especially when we compare it to the record of NDA with regard to what they achieved during their time. I think that nothing at all can be compared to our accomplishment.
It's our duty now to propagate them amongst the people throughout the country. It's also our duty, as I said yesterday, to counter all the accusations which are totally and blatantly baseless unfounded accusations being leveled by the opposition, particularly by the BJP.
Let me reiterate what I have said yesterday about corruption, we will take corruption head on and demonstrate through our actions and not through words alone that we mean what we say. I have made some specific suggestions in this regard and the Prime Minister in his inspiring address to us this morning has said and assured us that he will take them forward.
As far as our party's activities and programmers are concerned, we will begin preparations on the work for coming Chintan Shivir. We will launch a Jan Jagran Abhyaan throughout the country to inform the people about the achievements of our government and expose the BJP doublespeak. At least one public meeting should be held in every assembly constituency and PCC must take the lead in this programme. Many of you have spoken about the manner in which our flagship programmes are being implemented in different states. In many opposition states, these programmes in a way have been copied by the local government under some other name and thereby taking away the credit from our programmes. These programmmes, I am sure all of us know, are those programmmes which have been promised in our own manifesto. So that is why it's important that every PCC appoints a Monitoring Committee to get systematic feedback on the implementation of our flagship programmes. PCC should be fully involved in this exercise in order to give our workers a sense of involvement and participation. This PCC Monitoring Committee should submit an assessment report every quarter to AICC. In addition every PCC must ensure at least one session of all delegates to be held at least once a year. In states where we are in power, AICC will also create a Coordination Committee to ensure that regular and close interaction between the government and the party organizations takes place because we often receive complaints that somehow there is not enough interactions between government and the party. Committees will also be established in opposition ruled states as well to bring about proper cohesion between the CLP and the party organization.
A number of states go to elections in the next few months and there is simply no alternative to unity, hardwork and discipline and there is absolutely no place for complicacy or for taking things for granted or for hoping that from somewhere automatically things will happen.
