Speed Camera Increase

Since the Coalition Government came into power the number of speed cameras has increased

. In the run up to the election the now Prime Minister said he was a friend of drivers and to end the war on motorists. According to data there are now 2,331 fixed cameras on our roads in the United Kingdom which is an increase from 2,188 in 2010.

It appears to be general knowledge though that there are many around which are not actively taking photographs at the moment, I certainly know at least one in my area. The number of active cameras has decreased by 42. It is a general misconception that there has been a large switch off of cameras, which news reports seemed to suggest a couple of years ago and this has simply not happened.

But the argument of cameras being the enemy of all drivers has always confused me. I for one wish there were far more and I know for a fact Im not the only one. The attitude of a lot of people that were always being wronged for one reason or another is misguided. I love to drive, especially where I live near Guildford as it and its surroundings are places of significant natural beauty. Why would I want to race through them all as fast as I possibly can. The most annoying thing when on the road is tailgating. Who on earth gives these morons the right to be aggressive and abusive to people driving either at the speed limits, or at speeds appropriate for the area and roads.

I think we should see far more average speed cameras brought to our roads. Far more speed cameras too and I believe they should be hidden so no-one knows. Speeds limits are there for a reason. When we pass our tests we know full well what the rules are, the highway code and the laws. If anyone wants to go out and break them surely they know full well it was their decision only and they should accept the consequences. Speed cameras should be here to stay and I look forward to them being increased further in the coming years.
