Spend your next holiday in the beachside town of Torquay Australia

If you are traveling to the Great Ocean road then you will be sure to stop in Torquay

. A town that is considered the gateway to this famous road. Torquay is located in Victoria, Australia, south of Melbourne. It was settled by Europeans who found the area to be a lovely vacation area. The settlers decided to name the town after Torquay, England, a seaside resort.

Many people travel to Torquay just for the surfing and the beaches. Many of the beaches are world famous and 2 well known surfing beaches are Juan Juc and Bells beach. These beaches have been used as locations for movies. Additionally one of the longest running surfing competitions, Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music festival, is held at Bells beach as long as conditions are favorable. The competition is normally held around Easter.

The town is separated into several different sections. There are some residential areas, historic areas and then the beach. A lot of the town's new development has occurred along the beach and there is a distinct old and new section to the town. The main town areas include Church estate, Ocean Views, Zeally Bay, Wombah Park and Illawong Estate.

Besides surfing and the beach there are many coastal walks, both long and short, found in the area. A long walk that stretches 35 km is the surf coast walk. This walk will take you along high cliffs, walk along the ocean and cut through dense forests. There are many endangered species that call this spot home and can only be viewed when walking. The surf coast walk has been divided into shorter day walks so it is possible to enjoy the different areas without walking the entire 35 km.

There are other shorter walks that are about 5km in length. There is a trail to an old jarosite mine. The Koori walk is perfect for those looking to learn more about the medicinal native plants. The Ironbark track is a spur that branches off of the surf coast walk. This is an excellent trail to view some spectacular coastline near Point Addis.

There are even some great spots for scuba diving and snorkeling as there are many limestone reefs along the coast. A great protected area is the Point Danger marine reserve. The beaches are protected as is much of the area around Point Danger contain hiking trails and tracks.

If you have decided to drive the great touring route between Melbourne and Adelaide then you will pass through Torquay. Other attractions of note along this famous route are the Twelve Apostles, Otways rainforest, Bells Beach, the Surf Coast, Mount Gambier's Blue Lakes and the Coonawarra wine region. Along the road are plenty of spots for gorgeous views and a bit of adventure. It is possible to rent equipment for bicycle riding, kayaking and surfing.

A not to be missed experience is the chance to go up in a vintage, open air plane and perform air acrobatics. Not only is this a thrilling ride but you can also enjoy spectacular views of the twelve apostles.
