Spider Vein Treatment 101 - Facts You Should Know About Spider Vein Treatment

Spider veins are thin veins that appear close to the surface of the skin

, typically on the thigh and lower leg. Though harmless, they can be a cosmetic eyesore for those who have them. Fortunately there are several non-surgical treatments available to permanently reduce the appearance of spider veins.

Who gets Spider Veins?

Everyone has spider veins; they just appear more noticeable in:

Women

Pale skinned individuals

Obese individuals

Spider veins are also associated with people who spend a lot of time on their feet and those who have experienced leg trauma. They are associated with pregnancy and some contraceptives. If you are concerned about spider veins, contact your physician.

What Treatments are Available to Reduce the Appearance of Spider Veins?

To make spider veins less noticeable, two common treatments are used, all with high success rates: sclerotherapy and laser treatment. Sclerotherapy injects sterile sclerosing solution made of either hypertonic saline or sodium tetradecylsulfate into each spider vein, causing it to disappear. Laser Treatment dissolves the veins through concentrated light energy over the course of two to six visits. Though not a treatment per se, some individuals choose to camouflage their spider veins with special flesh-toned makeup designed specifically for this purpose. Camouflage is available through your physician or online.

What are the Risks Associated with Spider Vein Treatment?

As with any cosmetic treatment there are risks associated with both spider vein laser treatment and sclerotherapy, though these risks are minimal. After laser treatment, the treated area may appear red for a few days. This is natural and will disappear over time. There are few side effects and risks associated with sclerotherapy, though itching at the treatment site and slight pain have been reported. Your physician will discuss potential risks with your during your consultation and select the treatment right for you.

Is Spider Vein Treatment Covered Under Insurance?

Since spider vein treatments are cosmetic, they are not covered by insurance. However, your physicians office may offer financing plans to their patients. Ask the office staff during your consultation about the financing options that are available.
