Spina Bifida - One Of The Birth Defects With A Nice Name, But An Ugly Meaning

With all the great advantages that Lexapro as an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake

inhibitor) class antidepressant has, with all the safety and efficacy it has proved, it still is a medication, it still has possible side effects and it can still be risky to use. Paralysis does not always occur in the affected children, but the chances for its development are alarmingly high. Some of the children might be able to walk unaided, some will probably need short leg braces, but there will be others, who will only be able to maximize their movement with the use of a wheelchair. One thing is for sure: children affected by Lexapro and births defects linked to it, especially the like of spina bifida that have no cure yet, often live a life of constant affliction. The necessary periodical visits paid to orthopedists, neurosurgeons, or urologists are not only time-consuming, but they also demand a considerable financial effort from the entire family.

The actual cause of spina bifida is not yet known, but just like many other Lexapro birth defects, this congenital disorder is likely to develop during early pregnancy, often when the mother is not even aware of being pregnant.

Knowing this, it is easy to see why it is wise for a future mother to prepare in time for childbearing. A review of lifestyle, eating habits and emotional stress management will accentuate the changes that are to be made before conception. As a small example, it is known that the incidence of spina bifida can be decreased to as much as 70% if daily supplements of folic acid are taken prior to conception.

Act responsibly and when you are prescribed Lexapro for your depression, inform your physician about an incidental plan of becoming pregnant, as that piece of information might change the entire treatment plan. Even if it is still a mystery how does Lexapro cause birth defects, the fact that it does, remains a fact and the best you can do is to take precautions. The next best step, when already faced with Lexapro birth defects, is to take legal action and obtain the damage compensation from the drug manufacturer. You may need to file a Lexapro birth defect lawsuit.
