Spinal Endoscopic surgery (for HMC)
Endoscopic method is suitable for approximately 90% of degenerative conditions ( spinal canal stenosis or herniated disc) for those who are suffering from a herniated disc or narrowing of the canal. The surgery can be performed for up to two heights (ex. L3-4 and L4-5) in one session. Except for very rare situations involving clinical instability of the spine, most herniated disc, no matter their size, are eligible for surgery thanks to wide endoscopic vision. Through 1 cm skin incision, 3 cm of working area can be seen within the spinal canal.
This is the reason that with this method, bilateral narrowing of the spinal canal and large disc herniation can be treated through unilateral small incision. This surgery is also suitable for stable spondylolisthesis (movement of one vertebra over the other) and can avoid lumbar fusion in many cases. Dr. Davidovich, director of the neuroendoscopy spinal surgeries service in "Beilinson" hospital, is known as a pioneer of this method in Israel and has been operating since 2008 with high success rate.
Surgery is performed through 1 cm conduit. The fiber optic is attached to the camera. Camera increases picture up to 100 fold in an excellent quality and enables a wide angle viewing that allows vision "around the corner" which is much better than microscope or magnifying lens vision. Parallel to the optical fiber, a drill, pump and other tools are inserted. Excellent vision during surgery allows the surgeon to perform safe surgery with lower risk, all through a small incision and keeping spine stability. Endoscopic surgery often saves the need for the grand opening of the spine and fusion of the vertebrae. Recovery period is shorter compared to conventional surgeries.
The method was developed by Prof. Joe in Pittsburgh USA app. 20 years ago. The application of spinal surgery follows endoscopy of the skull base. Dr. Davidovich joined Prof. Joe in 2005 and was actually his first student, and operated hundreds of patients using this method at the same time Professor Joe did. In 2008 already performed the first surgery, using that technique in Israel on two herniated cervical disc in a patient. The patient was referred to Dr. Davidovich by the famous Rabbi Firer, and after the surgery, her life quality has changed beyond recognition.
