Sports has long evolved from being a mere recreational activity to a major industry that generates a large revenue

. Earlier it was seen as a form of recreation indulged in, specifically on holidays. But as time passed it grew from local games to international level matches. As newer technology gained acceptance in the market, it gave rise to greater exposure to sports as well. From newspapers to T.V & currently the World Wide Web, all stake their claims in reporting the live action from the field as well the breaking sports headlines 24X7.

As television channels grew in number and with the availability of DTH services, it was possible for all the current sports news to reach every household. All the dedicated sports channels reported the breaking sports news and telecast the games right in to the common mans living room. The sale of telecast rights and the bidding by the sponsors gave a new dimension to how sports channels functioned. The ad slots were sold to the sponsors who played the commercials in between matches & when a sports news bulletin was telecast. Also sports merchandise and souvenirs formed a good part of the sports industry revenue.

With the Internet joining in not far behind, the revenue generated by sports met a steady increase when it was possible to view sports news online. Several sports websites came up that reported the current sports news, gave the player stats and an assortment of other services. These sites also allowed the users to create their own profile online & upload their own videos or blogs. The increase in online traffic to these sites meant more revenue as ads were built in to these sites. As a user searches for sports news online, many sites may turn up that also have relevant ads which prove useful to the users. The ads might lead users to find their desired online sports community or a sports store in their town. The sites are usually paid an amount when a user clicks on the advertisement.

Sports booking has also been a major source of revenue for the industry. As booking has been made legal in many nations including the U.S and U.K, many sportsbooks have opened up that allow users to stake their wager online. Initially online sports booking was viewed with apprehension as users worried about their credit card information being stolen. They were distrustful of the online software and the honesty of the dealers. But now as stringent measures have been taken to avoid phishing at such sites & dealers are made to register and get a license, online sports booking has proved to be the easier and safer method of betting.
