Olympic Games Visa deal angers sports fansCard payments for Games limited to Visa customers

UK sports fans wanting to use plastic to apply for the London 2012 Olympic Games, buy merchandise or withdraw cash from an on-site ATM can only do so with a Visa card. MasterCard and American Express cards won't be accepted.Visa has secured an exclusive deal with London 2012, which makes cards backed by the provider the only option for people who want to pay for tickets and goods or get cash from venue ATMs. However, non-UK cardholders will be able to use other cards.

Sky Sports News taken off Freeview

The strategy of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp to extract maximum revenue from its content continued yesterday when it said that its UK sports news channel would become only available to pay-TV customers.Sky Sports News has been available to UK viewers for the past eight years on the digital terrestrial television platform known as Freeview, found in almost 11m homes in the country.British Sky Broadcasting, which produces the channel, said it had decided to invest more in Sky Sports News, offering a high-definition version.But to pay for that and other developments in technology, BSkyB said it was moving the channel off Freeview, replacing it with a "+1" time-shifted channel of Sky 3, to generate pay-TV revenue. In future it will only be visible on BSkyB's own service and the cable and broadband-based television output of Virgin Media and TalkTalk. Dominic Buch, analyst at Numis, said: "I think it's another step in the chain of Murdoch deciding he won't give content away for free." The move came two days after Mr Murdoch moved to take full control of BSkyB, of which News Corp holds 39.1 per cent. The New York-based group said it would make an offer of 700p a share, valuing the target business at 12.6bn, after any regulatory concerns expressed in Brussels or London had been resolved.BSkyB's independent directors said they would co-operate in addressing the regulatory issues that might stand in the way, but they would not consider an offer below 800p , which would force Mr Murdoch to pay another 1bn.Nick Bertolotti, senior media analyst at Credit Suisse, doubted the move to take Sky Sports News off Freeview presaged the Sky News channel becoming exclusively paid-for content. "That would be much more significant, but I don't see them doing that as they get great publicity for running Sky News somewhere where the vast majority of the population can see it."
