What is sports psychology? Is it a branch of psychology taught in schools and colleges
or it is a method of treating sportspersons? There are many myths surrounding the mental training provided to the players. Today players take both physical and behavioral training. They practice new game skills and also learn to control sex, emotions and frustration.
A game is played on two fronts. First is the physical side and second is the mental side. Players strive to give their best on the ground and also try to overcome the emotional stress associated with the game. The stress comes from the fear of losing the game. It is the fans that increase the level of stress. It is the audiences that incite players to go beyond their limits to win the game. The team that can control its emotions and focus on the game lifts the trophy.
Some players take much pain resulting in loss of strength. Ideally the players should take a game as a recreational activity and not a war. The job of a player is to give his best and not to perform according to audiences demands. Sportspersons should play to their self satisfaction and not for the satisfaction of their fans.
Sports psychology deals with the pressure players feel before the start of the game. It is learnt that a player always thinks about losing the game. He fears of losing his fans, faith of his managers and the income, he gets from the play. The pressure of losing everything makes the player extra-cautious and he couldnt focus on the game. He always thinks about doing better but he never considers using his inner strength as he doesnt know his true power.
Behavioral training helps a player recognize his inner strength and use it to the full. After taking mental training from renowned psychologists, the player feels light, confident, happy and healthy. He comes to the ground to show his strength and not to do what fans are asking. Sports psychology can certainly transforms a player into a true sportsman.
Sports psychology has improved the quality of the game. Whether it is an individual game or a team match, players are taking full advantage of the mental training to keep their nerves calm. They want to play well but the audiences and fans incite them to do things they would never like to do. Face of sports is changing and the credit goes to psychology.
