Sporty Doggy Spirit by:Margherite Cermak

As far back as dogs and clothes have existed simultaneously people have been dressing up their pets; it's just one more form of personal expression

. Sure doggy sweaters have practical uses such as keeping your dog warm in the winter, but let's be honest the real reason we dress up our dogs is because it's cute and fun. While typically Halloween is the most popular time to find the perfect dog Halloween costume, a whole new trend is on the rise. More and more people are converting their dogs into sports fans.

After all, it's not uncommon for the family dog to come along to a baseball game at your local diamond. More and more dogs are adapting to a sports themed look to match their enthusiastic nature to chase a ball. Everyone knows that our pets love to fetch baseballs, footballs, sticks, basketballs and Frisbees so why not dress them up like the sports loving pooches that they are? Surely dogs have the right to self expression as much as we do.

Today it's common to see a Poodle rocking Mets colors on a dog baseball jersey, or his favorite football team's logo on a dog football jersey. Okay, okay, so maybe your genius Jack Russell can't tell the difference between the Jets and the Giants, but you can certainly make him appear to have chosen a side. In fact this trend has become so popular that the Major League Baseball Association and the National Football League have actually designed entire lines of clothing, collars, leashes, toys and even booties for each of their teams. They even come in all sizes making them suitable for any breed of dog.

But why is it so important to so many people to accessorize their pets? Perhaps, or probably it's because it's in our nature to display what's important to us, and we like to include our pets in this process just as we include them in almost everything else in our lives. Our dogs are the first to kiss our faces as we wake up, they wait patiently beside us at the kitchen table, and the curl up next to us on the couch to watch our favorite shows. Naturally we would also want them to share our love for our home teams.

So maybe this trend of dressing up our dogs in sports attire and jazzing them up with accompanying accessories could be fun. If you haven't tried it yet, perhaps you should. Most likely your pets will take pride in their new gear, just be sure to keep an eye out for rival fans in the doggy park.
