Spotting Bootleg VHS, CDs or DVDs

Most entertainment lovers prefer original, DVDs, CDs and other types of media. Even so, there are fraudulent people out there who sell bootleg materials. "Bootleg" is the term used during the 1920's when alcohol production and consumption was not allowed in the United States. When it comes to CDs, DVDs and VHS, this refers to people who make their own copies of a particular CD or DVD and selling these unauthorized copies.

As a responsible consumer, you need to have the ability to spot bootleg media items. Otherwise, you're contributing to piracy, which means you're stealing from musicians and moviemakers. There are easy ways to spot these bootleg items. All you need is keen eyesight, a logical brain and a strong will. Here are some tips.

Examine the CD or DVD's packaging. You should know first what a studio authorized item looks like. Look at the cellophane cover around the packaging. On every edge, there should be a neat fold. If you have VHS, the folds can be found at the VHS' back and are known as belly fold, since they fold it as if its across the tapes belly. There are even some companies that mark the cellophane with their studio seals. Examples are FOX and Warner Home Videos.

For DVDs, look at one of the edges. There should be a white security strip with the DVD's name on it. Some have these strips around the three DVD edges.

Inspect the DVD's cover and label. It must have the four Cs: Clear, clean, crisp and colourful. If not, it's likely that the DVD is bootleg.

You need to spot questionable items. There are suspicious looking cellophane seals on some items. This means it might have been previously opened and then re-wrapped. Someone may also have wrapped it using a cellophane machine. Be very careful, since there are sellers which sells re-wrapped media, saying they're new.

It looks cheap and it is cheap. Here's the thing: because bootleg items cost less when manufactured and labelled. This is made to tempt buyers. The problem is there's no guarantee that these items will work on your player.

There are some un-monitored products from China which are not authorized and copyrighted. This comes from recent technical innovations. These frequently occur and the difference is not easy to tell. With a little determination, you can spot these items and maybe put a stop to this dishonest business.
