Spring Blooming Bulbs Planted in Fall
The spring blooming bulbs should be planted wherever it is possible in the sunshine during the fall
. These blooming bulbs generally sprout their foliage first with their flowers taking care of themselves at a later date. Sometimes it seems that these spring bulbs are simply magical; we plant the bubs in fall and during the spring these beautiful flowers seem to pop up out of the ground.
It is not a good idea to water these spring flower bulbs in the summer due to the fact that xome of them are bred in areas where there is no summer rain and are genetically programmed for drought conditions. If tulips get too much water during the summer they will probably rot away; this particular problem happened in my garden when I over-watered the tulips during the summer.
The spring bulbs need to be planted in an area that has excellent drainage. Some of the best places to plant them would be in raised flower beds, on slopes, on berms, or in an area where the water drains away easily. We should never plant these flowering bulbs closer than four feet from the house. The heat permeating from the house makes them grow prematurely and the ability to flower as they should will get damaged.
The bulbs should be planted shortly after receiving them so they will not dry out. As long as the soil has not started to freeze we can still plant bulbs. The soil needs to be prepared well to be sure there is good drainage. Dig into the soil at least eighteen inches and mix in some peat moss or compost to improve it. A little fertilizer designed for bulbs can also be added. Sometimes bone meal, a popular bulb fertilizer, does not always contain the proper nutrients that are needed. There have also been reports that when dogs smell the bone meal they dig up the bulbs.
Plant the bulbs in the ground with the pointed end up at the depth recommended for that particular flower bulb. Generally, hyacinths and tulips need to be about six to eight inches deep and daffodils six to nine inches. Snowflakes, snowdrips, glory-of-the-snow, crocuses, squill, and grape hyacinths need to be about three to five inches deep. For a grouping of bulbs dig a square hole and plant several of the bulbs around four to six inches apart.
Fall planted bulbs provide low maintenance in the garden from the early blooming snowdrops to the beautifully scented daffodils. It seems as though the year starts out when the snowdrops bloom and the bright purple or yellow crocus start to appear when some mild weather begins to appear. Seeing these flowers appear gives us a clue that winter is almost over. Daffodils are very popular bulbs to plant because of the varieties of size and color; an added feature is the deer leave them alone. Tulips are also a very popular spring flowering bulb that is available in various sizes and colors. If living in an area with wandering deer, they love tulips so if possible they need to be protected.
If living in the south or southwest, all the bulbs need to be planted before the Thanksgiving holiday so they can receive as much of the cool weather as possible; some can tolerate a planting as late as New Year. The important thing to remember is to allow the ground to cool enough before planting which happens later in warmer climates. Spring blooming bulbs can also be grown in containers by planting the early bulbs near the surface and the later blooming larger bulbs deeper in the container. All the spring bulbs are a bonus to any garden whether planted in the ground or in containers.
