Spring is the Time To Perform Outdoor Cleanup
The harsh winters in the upper Midwest leave most residents yearning for the sunshine as the calendar hits March. The urge to get outside and enjoy the slightly warmer weather after being couped up inside for so long is extremely enticing.
With the melting of the snow, the thaw of the grass, and the warmth of the rays, March 1st is considered the start of meteorological spring. While this is very exciting, it is means it is the start of the necessary evils known as spring preparation.
If you own a home, you will realize the outdoors need a great deal of attention before you can feel comfortable with your outdoor look. Here are a couple outdoor spring chores I perform each spring:
Cleaning the Garage over the winter months, your car has tracked in plenty of debris from the outside; salt, garbage, mud, etc. Also, it's harder to keep the garage clean due to the elements themselves; wind, rain, snow. It's too cold to organize the garage in the same manner you can in the summer and fall months. I like to move everything out of the garage and give it a nice hose down to make it look new. It's refreshing to make it look new again.
Fertilizing the Yard to avoid all sorts of weeds and nuisances, a dedicated weed control plan is in order. You have the option of doing it yourself or hiring a service. I have done both. Many hardware stores have 5 step programs that tell you exactly when to lay the fertilizer and how to do it. This costs around $100. There are also services that will do this 5 step program, plus a couple extras to make your lawn look healthy and fresh. This costs about $300 but allows you more free time to do other things. I've found success in both ways, however if you want to have control over your yard and do it your way, I suggest buying the program and doing it yourself.
Laying Mulch adding mulch to your flower beds and edged areas is an extremely sharp look and adds some a clean look to your home. Again, you can do this yourself or hire out a service. There are also very many types of mulch, including single, double or triple shredded, dark or light brown, and even rocks and fake rocks. Each have a place and their own positives.
Planting Flowers planting flowers gives you an unparalleled brilliance to your yard. Whether you choose annuals or perennials, you can expect the flowers to last all summer long and into the fall. Be sure to identify the attributes of each flower to determine if it prefers shade or sun and wet or dry areas. And be prepared to be watering these flowers plenty in hot months. Other additions to flower beds are solar powered fountains which require no electricity except for the sun.
As you can see, while the Spring brings us plenty of sun and enjoyment, there are also responsibilities that you don't have in the winter to deal with. In my opinion, I warmly enjoy these chores each and every year, because warm weather trumps cold and damp any day of the week, 365 days a year.
