Springfield, Missouri Photographer Takes Unique Approach With Clients
Hiring any type of creative professional can be a stressful proposition
. In many cases, it should probably come with a disclaimer similar to those used by mutual funds....past performance does not guarantee future results. You choose a photographer, web designer, or any other similar designer based on what you see in their portfolio of past works, and then place your bet and just hope they can produce something of a similar quality for you. If not, well, you still owe them for their time whether you are happy with the final product or not.
Springfield, Missouri photographer Matt Roberts knows that frustration first hand, and wanted to prevent his own clients from feeling that stress.
Any time I have hired graphic designers, web designers, etc., I have always dreaded it. I have been burned a time or two, and it's not fun. You may look at their portfolio and see some nice work, and they may very well give you what you are looking for. But they may also provide you with something that's not at all close to what you were wanting. They are still going to want to be paid, or charge extra over what you have already budgeted in order to revise the work. It can really be a waste of time and money, and you still may not end up with what you really wanted.
So, Roberts decided that if he was feeling that stress in hiring a creative professional, his clients probably felt the same stress.
I'm pretty confident in my work, so I'm not afraid to go do a shoot without a deposit. Our policy is pretty simple. When a client schedules a shoot, we do the shoot without a deposit, no money down at all. If the client isn't happy with the photos, they don't have to buy them. It's that simple. The only thing they have wasted is 1 or 2 hours of time, but honestly, it hasn't happened yet. Look, why should someone have to pay for photos they don't like? They shouldn't. Not in my opinion. When you're buying a pair of shoes, or a car, or even a house, you get to try them out, see if you like them before you buy. Why should this be any different? So our philosophy is, I'll make pictures of you, and if you like them, you can buy them. If not, no hard feelings. I think the clients appreciate it.
