Spyaway Rogue Allows Others To Spy Away At Your Computer

Because many of the activities in which we engage online require that we enter in

personal and/or financial information, it is understandable that security is such a big issue. Rogue antivirus programs like Spyaway seek to use this to their own advantage and persuade computer users to purchase useless software programs.

The Rogue Antivirus Program Spyaway

Rogue antivirus programs arent particularly innovative: they depend on the same methods and tools to persuade computer users of infection. Their goal is to convince us to buy their software. To do this, programs like Spyaway must first convince us that we have security threats in our systems, and this is where they pull out the old standby the pop-up. While these may look like warning messages and scan results from a legitimate security program, be assured that it is just an elaborate ad campaign designed to persuade you that your system and/or data is at risk.

How Do I Know if Spyaway is In My System?

The first sign that a rogue program has entered your computer is likely to be pop-up after pop-up which are created to mimic those issued by legitimate security programs. They warn of Trojans, keyloggers, adware, spyware, and other forms of malicious software, urging you all the while to activate their full protection in order to resolve these problems. These messages may appear on your screen or after you click on new flashing icons on your systems tray.

The ads may also take the form of security scan results. Those issued by Spyaway are typically red and white, with the rogues name and shield symbol in the top left corner. It will either give you the option of starting a scan or will list several infected files it has found. In both case, it is important to remember that these are ads: there has been or will be no scan. Those infections it has found are completely harmless files it has created for exactly this purpose.

You will also notice that your computers performance has slowed and that you are frequently redirected to websites advertising Spyaway.

How Does Spyaway Gain Access?

Spyaway, like most rogue antivirus programs, is spread via Trojans. These tend to congregate in sites that contain questionable material, which could be anything from adult content to trending topics. The Trojans disguise themselves as necessary software or codecs: Zlob, for instance, masks itself as a video codec so when you download an affected video, it gives Zlob access to your computer. From there, Zlob deposits malware it was carrying. This is the free version.

The paid or full version is no different from this Trojan-delivered rogue. It differs only in that you have paid for it and installed it directly. It, like the free version, provides no protection.

The risk to your computer is that this security vulnerability will be exploited and so other forms of malware can threaten its stability or the security of your data. Because of this risk, it is important to remove Spyaway immediately after you recognize its presence.
