Squeaky Rocking Chair Problems? Tips for Stopping the Maddening Noise
First, assess the situation
First, assess the situation. Where does the squeak seem to be coming from? Is it a screw that's loose? Is it a joint where wood meets wood? Is it a spring under the seat? By understanding where the squeak is coming from you have won half the battle. Is it really the rocking chair or glider rocking chair or could it be the floor under the chair?
Problem: Loose Screw(s)
Solution: Get out the screwdriver and tighten those screws.
Problem: Creaky, squeaky joint
Solution: It needs lubrication. Try some candle wax melted into the joint or some Pam cooking spray. WD40 is another good lubricant. Petroleum jelly may work as well.
Problem: Squeaky spring under the seat
Solution: Again, the spring needs to be lubricated. Try some WD40 or cooking spray.
Problem: Loose dowel rod on the rocking chair
Solution: Look for the loose dowel and either wedge a shim next to the dowel where the squeak is coming from and add some wood glue to further secure the dowel.
Problem: Squeaky floor board under the chair
Solution: Move the chair to a different location? Tighten the floorboard with a nail or screw, add some wood glue to tighten the squeaky board. Talcum powder has been suggested too.
It's just a matter of a little detective work to find the squeaky culprit and a little ingenuity and household product to fix it. No need to store your glider or rocking chairs in the basement never to be used again when you have some solutions to the problem.
