Snow-Flaky Science!

Ever want to have a snowflake of your own? One that you could bring inside, keep all summer and remind you of how much fun it is to ski, sled and have snowball fights! Here's a recipe to make a borax crystal snowflake that you'll be able to hang in your window-so you can always have a bit of snow around

What you will need

20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster

Wide-mouth jar

String

White Pipe Cleaners

Hot Water (get an adult to help)

Pen or Pencil (longer than your jar is wide)

The Experiment

Step 1. Cut the pipe cleaner in three equal pieces and twist together in a star shape with six points.

Step 2. Wrap the string through the points of the pipe cleaner star so it begins to look like a snow flake.

Step 3. Tie another piece of string from one of the pipe cleaners' points to the middle of the pen or pencil.

Step 4. Ask an adult to boil water and pour it into the jar.

Step 5. Stir borax powder into the water one tablespoon at a time until no more will dissolve.

Step 6. Dangle the pipe cleaner snowflake into the borax solution by resting the pen or pencil on top of the jar. Make sure the snowflake doesn't touch the sides or bottom of the jar! Leave for at least one day and watch the crystals grow!

Step 7. Hang the snowflake so you can always remember your fun-filled winter days!

What's Going On?

Snowflakes are actually tiny water crystals similar to the ones you made with borax powder. Because the water in the jar was hot, more borax than normal was able to dissolve in the water, called a super saturated solution. As the water cooled, it couldn't hold as much dissolved powder so the powder jumped onto your snowflake. These borax crystals give your snowflake its shiny, glistening look.

The size and shape of the snowflakes depends on the temperature and the humidity (how much moisture there is in the air) at which it freezes.
