June, 2004 marks a special anniversary for the small, little-known Caribbean island of St Lucia: it was when UNESCO named St Lucia's Pitons Management Area (PMA) a World Heritage Site. The 3000 hectare refuge protects coral reefs that are home to 170 species of fish and 60 varieties of corals, besides a geothermal field, sulphurous vents and hot springs, and St Lucia's most famous landmarks, the two volcanic spires of the the Piton Peaks.

The Pitons, twin volcanic spires clad in dense, brilliant green rainforest, tower 700 meters above the brilliant onyx Caribbean sea and are iconic symbols of the natural beauty and exotic romanticism of the Caribbean. Almost 150 species of plants can be found on the Pitons, as well as 30 species of bird, and opossums, bats, reptiles, amphibians, and rodents.

The settlement of Soufriere, a colonial-era town on this British protectorate located north of Barbados in the eastern Caribbean, lies at the foot of the Pitons.
