Stable Rugs And The Importance Of Them
Stable rugs are important for horses, just like turnout rugs
. Horses that are worked feel the cold more than horses that are not, and it's important that you keep your horse warm.
Wild horses and those who live out in the field all year round, develop a rough coat that helps them to retain their body heat and allow them to become used to the night temperatures. Horses that work, that have been clipped and that spend the night in stables are different. They can easily fall vulnerable to cold temperatures and need help in keeping warm. We all know that during the night the temperature drops. In the winter this can drop to below freezing.
Think of stable rugs as duvets for your horse. Wearing one means that your horse can snuggle down for a warm night no matter how cold it gets outside.
Stables rugs, like turnout rugs, can be found with different fills that cater for your needs and the season. With lightweights which range from no fill to 150g, to heavyweights with 250g to 500g, and medium weights for the in-between months. And for those extra cold nights where the heaviest of heavyweights arent adequate enough to keep your horse warm, you can also find under rugs which you can use to layer.
Under rugs are worn under the stable rugs and help to trap more heat and keep it close to the skin. The heat lost through the first rug then gets trapped under the second, keeping your horse warmer throughout the night. But if you haven't got an under rug, people often use other rugs such as fleeces or lightweight stable rugs.
However, stable rugs differ from turnout rugs in that they are not waterproof. A turnout rug will keep your horse dry in their field on a rainy day, but a stable rug wont. This is why stable rugs are best used in the stable during the night as opposed to being turned out in. Your horse will not appreciate being kept in a field in the rain whilst wearing a wet, cold and heavy rug.
