Stained Granite Countertops? These Tips Can Help!

Dealing with a stained granite countertop can be a huge source of frustration, as it's easy to believe that the stain will be there for forever. But there are a few surefire ways to get rid of these types of stains.

You've paid a lot of money to have the perfect granite countertop put in your home. You've tried your best to take care of it, but one morning you wake up to find a large stain on your granite countertop. You try to remove it with warm water and lightly scrub it, but the stain isn't moving. You may instantly jump to the conclusion that the stain is going to be there for eternity. Is there any way to move a stubborn stain from your beautiful countertop?

The Type of Stain Means Everything

It's a good idea to try to figure out what type of stain you're dealing with before you get really serious about removing it. The best way to attack the stain depends on exactly what it is. You wouldn't treat an oil stain or grease stain the way that you would treat something like markers or organic stains. Try to figure out what the stain is before you treat it. Ask anyone in the household if they know where the stain came from and look around the area where the stain is. Understand the root of the stain, then you'll be ready to tackle it.

Treating the Stain A Quick Primer

It's time to treat your kitchen countertops because now you know what type of stain you have. Let's start with an oil stain. If you have an oil stain, like the type of grease stain that you may get when you're frying something, a solution of hydrogen peroxide, a cup of flour, and some water should help remove it. Add water to the mixture until it turns into a paste. This is not a quick fix, as you'll then have to put the paste onto the stained area and to cover it with plastic wrap for at least twelve hours. Many people do this overnight so that no one will disturb the solution. In the morning, simply scrape off the mixture with a wooden spoon and the stain should have disappeared.

If you're dealing with an organic stain, such as a coffee stain or even a fruit juice stain, add some hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of ammonia. Then simply rub it into the granite countertop, and you should be able to see the stain disappear almost instantly. Alternately, if you're dealing with something like markers, you can simply use paint thinner to get rid of the stain that was put on the granite. If you have light countertops, try sticking with straight hydrogen peroxide.

If you have a heavy stain and you have no idea what caused it, and no amount of warm water and dish washing soap is getting rid of the mark, it's time to make another concoction. Add a few tablespoons of dishwashing liquid with a cup of flour and, again, some water just enough to make a paste. As with the previous stain mixture, put it on the stain and cover it with plastic wrap overnight. Scrape it off in the morning and the stain should have disappeared.
